Titan Submarine 🐳

On June 18, 2023, Titan, a submersible operated by the American tourism and expedition company OceanGate, experienced a catastrophic failure during an expedition to explore the Titanic wreckage in the North Atlantic Ocean, near Newfoundland, Canada.

Communication with Titan was lost approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive. Concerns arose when Titan failed to resurface at its scheduled time later that day.

After four days, a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) discovered Titan's debris field, about 500 meters (1,600 feet) from the Titanic's bow.

The internet, true to form, responded with a barrage of memes about the incident.

Chinese SPY balloon 🎈

Between January 28 and February 4, 2023, a high-altitude balloon launched from China cruised across North American skies, traversing regions including Alaska, western Canada, and the contiguous United States.

On February 4, the U.S. Air Force intercepted and brought down the balloon over U.S. territorial waters off the South Carolina coast.

Naturally, the internet couldn't resist, and a plethora of memes emerged, poking fun at the balloon, the government, and the states it passed over.
